What should we expect out of the Ghana Premier League?

The 2025/26 season of the Ghana Premier League kicks off on Friday, September 12, 2025, with traditional powerhouses Accra Hearts of Oak, hoping to return to what they believe is their rightful place at the summit of Ghanaian football when they take on the newly promoted Hohoe United in Accra.

Why should we stay interested in the Ghana Premier League this season?

It has been a long and painstaking road for the Ghana Football Association, the Ghana League Clubs Association, and the Premier League Board in improving both the quality and branding of the top league in our game. This season, there has been a commendable effort with regard to how awareness for the start of the league has been handled, particularly with the provision of a regular countdown and pre-season updates on the official social media platforms of the league, as well as the reintroduction of the GHALCA Top 4 tournament.

In addition to that, the opening game of the season will be graced by the presence of the President, H.E John Dramani Mahama, as well as feature a half-time performance from multiple award-winning Afro-Dancehall star Stonebwoy!

With that being said, all that will be for naught if the fans can’t have access to the games; to which the GFA has managed to attempt to resolve this by announcing that local traditional coverage of the league will be handled by Media General’s TV3 and Onua FM, whereas adesa+ will cover the official streaming duties this season. On the pitch, the GFA President Kurt Okraku has promised that there will be improvements to the financial situations of the clubs and their players as well, starting with the announcements of both an increment in salaries and also the prize money that’s waiting for the winners of the league, among other things!

While this is well and good to start with in the short term, what should be the sustainable long term plan?

The key stakeholders in Ghanaian football (including us, the fans and the media), should come together to ensure that our football continues to grow in leaps and bounds. For one thing, we need to ensure that discipline from our security agencies, and the safety of our fans, playing and non-playing staff of the teams, and match day officials are never compromised in any situation moving forward. We also need to ensure that enough sponsorship and partnerships are developed to protect the long-term health of Ghanaian league football as a whole, not just for the Premier League, the Women’s Malta Guinness Premier League, as well as their respective lower divisions. And finally, we need to continually develop football at the grassroots level, and encourage our clubs and their staff to give back to their communities to further build the love with the fans!

Who wins the title at the end of the season?

Last season saw Bibiani Gold Stars win their maiden Ghana Premier League title, and they will be hoping to retain their title and remain at the top of the summit of Ghanaian football? Will any of the traditional powerhouses, Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko be able to regain their glory? Will we see Samartex and Medeama continue to challenge for the top spot? Or will someone else fancy their chances this season?

Can Bibiani Gold Stars retain the Ghana Premier League crown this season? Or will we see a new league champion?
