Can the Black Stars move away from the monkey dey work, baboon dey chop phenomenon with players choosing to represent based on convenience?

Sunday, the 12th of October 2025, saw Ghana’s Senior Men’s football side, the Black Stars, qualify for the nation’s 5th appearance at the FIFA World Cup. The feat, which is the West African nation’s second consecutive qualification to the global showpiece event under the current coach Otto Addo, was, however, overshadowed by the rumours of English duo Callum Hudson-Odoi and Eddie Nketiah seeking to lock down slots in the final 26-man squad for the mundial.

Why are these rumours of Hudson-Odoi and Nketiah joining the Black Stars squad kicking up a storm? Well… Jamie says!!!

It’s no secret that every footballing nation worth its salt wants to win the biggest prize in the game, and as such, it should come as no surprise that every footballer would grab at the chance to represent their nation at the World Cup.

Both Nketiah and Hudson-Odoi are of Ghanaian heritage and have both represented the Three Lions of England in the past. While that in itself is not particularly an issue (seeing as they’ve both not amassed enough senior caps to be tied permanently to the English National Team), the fact that they snubbed all previous attempts to honour the invitation to switch their national allegiance and the convenient timing of this newfound interest (if the rumours are indeed carrying substance) has rubbed the majority of Ghanaian football fans the wrong way.

The duo will certainly not be the first to hold dual citizenship and switch allegiance. In the current Black Stars set-up, players like Jordan Ayew (France), Antoine Semenyo (England), Tariq Lamptey (England) and Inaki Williams (Spain) all joined the national team when they could have played for their other nation, and in the past, the same could also be said for Andre Ayew (France), the current coach of the national team Otto Addo (Germany), Adam Kwarasey (Norway), Junior Agogo of blessed memory (England), Kevin Prince-Boateng (Germany) and Quincy Owusu-Abeyie (The Netherlands).

In saying that, most of these players didn’t send the nation on a merry-go-round and toy with our heartstrings, and the majority of them paid their dues by grinding their teeth in the hard World Cup and African Cup Of Nations qualifying rounds when called up! The era of us begging players to wear the colours of our nation should be way behind us, and with that, should also bring the end of these players seemingly walking into the side when all is rosy, at the expense of members of the squad who toiled during the qualifying rounds.

Do have your say!!!

What do you guys think? Should both Nketiah and Hudson-Odoi (and any other player in that scenario) be given the chance to play for Ghana? If yes, should it be with the intention of representing us at the FIFA World Cup, or after the tournament? Otto Addo recently stated that these decisions would be made on a case-by-case basis, but do you feel it’s solely his decision to make? Or might he see himself potentially influenced by higher-ups in the Ghanaian football ecosystem? Let’s hear from you!

I think we need them, aside from the squad depth, but also the experience from the premier league. It helps if most of your players are from a top league.

In as much as experience is needed, joining the team after the hard work is done can not guarantee they putting in their all for the national team. Watch how players like Partey, Kudus and Jordan play like their lives depend on it. Particularly for Jordan who after the negative criticism still plays with all he has

Exactly! Jordan has been through it all, and yet he remain focused and deserves his flowers!
